When you’re a mama, every single day is uncharted territory. You never know what to expect from your little ones, and from everything else that needs your attention whether it be work, your partner, your home, and even your peers and other family members.
With this in mind, I was thinking about how to make 2023 different from the rest – how I can make it my year. When I became a mother, there was nothing more constant in my mind than wanting to be a better mama for my little ones physically, mentally, and of course, financially.
So as the new year kicked in, I sat down and wrote my new year’s resolutions the same way I did every single year, but this time, I decided to be more specific. I believe that like me, every mama wants nothing less than the best for their children. I’m sharing my new year’s resolutions here in hopes of inspiring other mamas to try and do the same.
Build a Consistent Routine
Like I mentioned earlier, navigating through motherhood can seem like uncharted territory every single day. However, building a consistent routine can help you stay on course and somehow anticipate and prepare for the day ahead.
Personally, I wake up at 6:30AM to prepare breakfast for the family. Then, while the little ones are still asleep, I try to sneak in as much work as I can so that when they wake up, I can spend a couple of minutes with them before going back to work.
In the afternoon, I sneak in the errands I need to do for the day before wrapping up work so that the evening is reserved for the family only.
While this is my personal schedule, you can create your own to suit your own lifestyle. Sticking to a routine and making it a habit can make you feel more organized and ultimately, give you a better headspace as you no longer forget to do anything or feel stressed about needing to do anything else.
Prioritize Family Over Everything
I live by the saying “work to live, not live to work,” because at the end of the day, nothing is more important than my family. When days get difficult and I feel something eating me up or stressing me out, my resolution is to pause, take a breather, and spend time with my family to keep me grounded and remind me why I work hard every day.
Keep a Healthy Lifestyle
The COVID-19 pandemic kept me in check. As a person who used to be so “chill” about her health, I started to take steps in trying to maintain a healthier lifestyle. With a family now relying on me, I make sure to stay up-to-date with my medical checkups and take all the supplements prescribed by my doctor to keep me as healthy as I can be. Likewise, I promised to start exercising again this year to keep myself in shape after giving birth last year.
Whatever it is you think is best for you, keep at it, mama. Living a healthy lifestyle has no rulebook, and you can do what it is that fits your schedule and your interests best.
Doing Things for ME
We mamas have so many things to do in a day that it can be easy to forget to do something for ourselves! This year, I promised to do at least one thing for myself every single day. It doesn’t have to be anything grand and can be as simple as treating myself to a nice cup of coffee, or journaling for 15 minutes… whatever it is that makes you feel at peace, mama, do it.
So many people have told me that when we take care of ourselves first, we’re able to care for our families better; and it’s true! Let this mantra guide us this year as we try to become the best versions of ourselves.
Have an Attitude of Gratitude
As I start and end my day this year, I promised myself to be grateful. Starting and ending each day with a prayer of gratitude allows me to stay connected with my faith, and reminds me that everything I have is a gift from God.
When you acknowledge each day that life is a gift, you’re motivated to live it the best you can. This year, I want to live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment with my loved ones, as time is gold and something you just can’t take back.
There are many different ways to achieve our goals, mama, but at the end of the day, it’s our love for family that drives us. As we begin this new year, take some time to sit down, reflect, and jot down your thoughts and intentions for the year.
When you do so, you’ll have something to look back at every single day to keep you accountable. We got this, mama!
Happy New Year!
