COVID-19 Arcturus Subvariant
As parents, we know you want to keep your family safe and informed, especially with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We'd like to provide you with a comprehensive update on the new Omicron subvariant, XBB.1.16, also known as the Arcturus variant.
Please read on to learn about this new variant and tips for keeping your family safe during these challenging times.
The Philippines recently detected its first case of the Arcturus subvariant, which has been found in 33 countries. Although limited information is available, researchers are currently studying its transmissibility, immune evasion, and ability to cause more severe disease. Parents should be aware of this new subvariant and take necessary precautions to protect their children. Here’s what we know so far:

What is Covid-19 Arcturus Variant?

The Arcturus variant, first reported on January 9, was designated as a variant of interest on April 17 after being detected in 33 countries across six continents. It is an Omicron subvariant with one additional mutation in the spike protein, which lab studies have shown to increase infectivity and potentially pathogenicity. The World Health Organization (WHO) has assessed its overall risk as low, and there is currently no evidence suggesting that it is more dangerous than other Omicron variants.

Symptoms in Children:

Anecdotal reports from pediatricians in India associate the Arcturus variant with symptoms such as "itchy" or "sticky" eyes, high fever, and cough in infected children. Parents should stay vigilant and monitor their children for these symptoms.

Tips for Keeping Your Family Safe:

  • Stay informed: Keep yourself updated on the latest information about the Arcturus variant and follow guidelines from trusted sources like the WHO and your local health department.
  • Get vaccinated: Ensure that your family members receive their COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots as recommended by health authorities. Vaccination remains the most effective and best long-term protection against the virus.
  • Practice good hygiene: Encourage your children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content if soap and water are not available.
  • Wear masks: Continue wearing masks, especially in crowded or public areas, to protect your family from possible exposure to the virus.
  • Maintain social distance: Encourage your family to keep a safe distance from others, especially in public spaces and gatherings.
  • Ensure proper ventilation: Make sure there is good airflow in your home and public spaces to help minimize the risk of infection.
  • Isolate when sick: If a family member shows any symptoms of COVID-19, ensure they isolate themselves and seek medical advice as soon as possible.
While the situation remains uncertain, it is crucial to stay vigilant and continue practicing preventive measures to protect your family. Stay informed, empathic, and support each other during these trying times. Together, we can navigate this pandemic and keep our families safe.
